In short, there aren’t too many differences between the Mazda 3 and the Mazda 3 MPS. When the Mazda 3 was being sold to different markets in Europe, it was renamed from the Mazda 3, the name it had when it was sold in the United States, to the Mazda 3 MPS, or Mazda 3 Mazda Performance Series. In some cases, the MPS version of the Mazda 3 is sometimes referred to as the MazdaSpeed3.
While it’s an unlikely mistake to be made from a dealership, when you’re looking at advertisements for used cars in your area, it’s always wise to confirm that the car being advertised is indeed a Mazda 3 or MPS version, as the two often get confused.
Mazda 3 MPS
In general, the Mazda 3 MPS has always been a faster and sleeker version of the standard Mazda 3. Cosmetically, things like the trim and the light styling on the MPS were different from the standard Mazda 3 models. This was because during tests, different models performed better in European and Australian markets and required different types of exterior styling.
In terms of performance, the MPS comes with a 2.3 litre turbo diesel engine. The engine has been seen in many of the previous versions of both the Mazda 3 and the MPS, but newer versions of the MPS have had revisions made to both the ECU and gear change ratios. These ECU flashes and changes to the gear ratios have in turn made the vehicle much faster and more fuel efficient, despite minor increases to the overall weight of the vehicle.
